Joe is an Honorary Research Lecturer in the School of Chemistry, NUI Galway. His teaching responsibilities include:
- CH311 – Third year organic chemistry, covering heterocylic and heteroaromatic compounds
- CH202 – Second year organic chemistry, covering the chemistry of alcohols [PDF], aldehydes and ketones [PDF] (2021-present, online delivery [example of interactive recap lecture, and sample problem set 1 and 3)
- CH101 – First year introduction to organic chemistry
- Supervising 1 PhD and co-supervising 1 PhD student
- Supervising and examining Final Year BSc Research projects (2019-present)
- Oral examinations of Bio- and Pharmaceutical Chemistry Final Year dissertations (2020-present)
- Chairing weekly organic chemistry problem solving group with 5 postgraduate students from the School of Chemistry

- Senior Laboratory Demonstrator in charge of 1st year Health Sciences practical module. Managed 5 demonstrators, instructing organic, inorganic and physical chemistry experiments (2013-14)
- Laboratory Demonstrator to 1st and 2nd year undergraduate students (2010-13)
- Designed and supervised 2 Final Year BSc research projects
